How do I choose the right stainless steel grade for my application?

Start with the actual service environment, including corrosion exposure, operating temperature, required strength, forming method, welding requirements, appearance, regulatory requirements, and target cost. Grade 304 is a widely used general-purpose option, while 316L provides additional resistance in more demanding chloride or corrosive environments. Ferritic grades such as 430, 409L, and 439 may provide suitable combinations of corrosion resistance, heat performance, formability, and cost for specific applications.

What information should I include in a stainless steel RFQ?

Include the required grade or governing standard, thickness and tolerance, width and width tolerance, surface finish, temper or hardness, edge condition, coil inner diameter, coil weight, quantity, packaging, inspection documents, end application, and delivery destination.
